DRAFT site upgrade. JEA ‘Truth’ ships today!

Today we just launched a redesign for sister label DRAFT’s main page! Our site is now mobile-friendly. It is built on bootstrap, using the HTML5/CSS3 spec, with a bit of JS and jQuery to help things out. We’ve simplified the design to address load times and addressed issues with our audio player. Please give us feedback and/or let us know if something isn’t working right!

Also, today is the day that Jason E Anderson’s Truth cassette ships! We still have copies available.

Norm Chambers
Norm Chambers, shot by Dave @looserailing

Our first show of 2017 felt like a real success, with the help of friends, lovely music and a supportive audience.  It’s an especially important time for live music, for building community and for experiencing the creative expression of artists.

The evening opened up with a beautiful set by Norm Chambers on synthesizers, beginning with an intriguing introduction of mangled frequencies, followed up by one of his more signature melodic sets, offset by an LPG’d motorik beat powered by his euro-modular.

Jonathan Sielaff

Jonathan Sielaff presented a powerful, dynamic set of processed bass clarinet and loops paired with a video sequence of structures among natural landscapes.  His piece drew attention to the acoustics of space and varied in intensity throughout.  Light floating melodies pierced by atonal moments of ripping, sub-augmented whines filled the space.  My personal favorite moments were the forceful, flattening gestures that sounded like the removal a throat from a live guerrilla – intense!

Million Mists

Million Mists, Jamie Potter’s solo project, performance was a cold and cryptic set of feedback loops and synthesis accompanying a new video experiment.  Potter’s adeptness as an improviser guided him into new and unusual territories of cycling sub bass tones and discrete hums on a self-oscillating analog drum head, a 70s wind/wave machine and delayed arpeggiations on a Pro-One, despite a brief technical issue of a dying piece of gear audibly hissing its way out of commission.  The sounds were reminiscent of Potter’s early work with drone and noise in Bonus circa 2004.  I inquired about the video after the show and he explained that he used a modified image of his own head (that we used for our press image) and 3D printed it, placed it on a turntable to rotate the head while projecting video feedback loops onto it, shooting it and then applying some post-processing.  Video sample below:

This show wouldn’t have gone so well without the help of two great friends: James Watkins running video and lights, and Robert (RM) Francis managing the door. The Wayward Music Series (Steve Peters) generously offers a beautiful space to host performances, but the PA setup, running sound, working the door and managing the artists can be challenging without the help of a good team.  Special thanks to those two for making this first performance a huge success!

New DRAFT LP! $.99 Dreams ‘Spei Res’ coming October 15

$.99 Dreams 'Spei Res' LP

Preorders now available at draftrecords.com

DRAFT is pleased to announce its second LP release from underground jazz-synth duo $.99 Dreams. Spei Res, roughly translated from Latin as “thing of hope”, plays like a suite of soundtrack miniatures driven by virtuosic drumming and synthesizer textures. Seemingly oblivious to musical trends, Adam Diller (synth, sax, production) and Matt Crane (drums) have crafted a distinctive sound that unifies electronic music, jazz improvisation, and hip hop production techniques. Spei Res finds them further down this path, exploiting the recording studio to build and modify improvisations into a sonically dense and kinetic record. Connected to the likes of Sun Ra, Varèse, and J Dilla, $.99 Dreams craft a highly personalized music. The album feels both ancient and new, building a language out of pummeling rhythms, dynamic keyboard passages, and sculpted atmospheres, enhanced by Diller’s articulate production work. Spei Res is a colossal record, containing a life music that is self-aware, revelatory and knows what it’s up against.

Gecko Dream Levels review in The Wire

The Wire, June p63

Just got word this morning that Matt Carlson’s recent Gift Tapes release has been reviewed in the June issue of The Wire magazine.  I’ve seen a few reviews of Gecko Dream Levels out there in cyberspace, and most of them basically warn people that it’s SO WEIRD you may have difficulty listening to it.  Check this one out from OMG Vinyl:

You may have a little harder time wrapping your ears around Matt Carlson’s offering for the newest Gift Tape batch. It is a far, far gone piece of electronic experimentation.

You’ll notice that The Wire pretty much follows suit.

For me, the weirder the record, the better… and the more I want to listen to it.  As a listener, I’m attracted to work that is challenging and hard to figure out—this is what I think distinguishes art from craft.  I am a true fan of Carlson’s bizarro world.  This tape has become my gateway to enter the deep waters of creative meditation, in search of the big, deep fish (deep-diving David Lynch fans will know what I’m talking about).

For those of you that are ready and waiting for more, keep your eyes peeled on the DRAFT website.  We’ll be issuing our first LP for Matt in the coming months, and let me tell you: this one ups it a notch on the weirdo-scale!  And for those of you in Seattle this Friday, May 13th, come check out Matt’s solo modular set at the Chapel Performance Space in Wallingford.

Wintertime News & Updates

JOEL BRINDEFALK, A ROUGH PATCH ATLANTIC TRIANGULAR TRADE, VELVET SATELLITE

I was pleased to see DRAFT (Gift Tapes sub-label) get some reviews in The Wire, thanks to Nick Richardson.  Joel Brindefalk’s A Rough Patch and Atlantic Triangular Trade’s Velvet Satellite made it into the Outer Limits review section. We’ve posted samples of all the DRAFT tapes – check them out on the site: draftrecords.com You can find the review below.

Turns out Brother Raven’s diving into the pineapple portal LP in The Wire as well, from last month (thanks to Keith Moliné). Dave Segal posted it here on The Stranger Line Out music blog. Many thanks to Aguirre Records for making that re-release possible! Check out their newly re-designed website: www.aguirrecords.com to see all the killer jams Pieter has in store for us!

NEW Gift Tapes are coming soon. My thought is they’ll be ready sometime in late February… a little later than expected, but that’s not too far off. This batch includes solo projects from both members of Brother Raven, as well as the new solo tape by Matt Carlson (synth player in Golden Retriever). Since this will be Gift Tapes 2nd year in business, we’ve planned some pretty crazy surprises for this set of releases. You won’t want to miss out, so get in on the action as soon as these drop. I’ll post the release date and related info to the blog when the time comes. Keep posted!

Last week we received exciting news that one of our favorite Gift Tapes releases, Bee Mask‘s Canzoni dal Laboratorio del Silenzio Cosmico, will see a LP re-release on  Edition Mego‘s new sub-label Spectrum Spools.   EM’s releases are always top-notch, and this one will be cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering (meaning this LP will sound amazing!).  It’s a limited edition of 500, due out April 4th – pre-order while you can!  Congratulations Chris Madak!

GT021
Oregon Painting Society
Radiant Dream Face, GT021, c30, edition of 150
Totally bizarre sound worlds from an island of misfit droids.  Offered up by up-and-coming Portland art collective Oregon Painting Society (core members include: Matt Carlson, Brenna Murphy, Barbara Kinzle, Birch Cooper, and Jason Traeger) this recording is a document of their Radiant Dream Face installation mounted at Portland State University, December 2009.  Improvisations with houseplants, a pair of corn cobs and a glass crystal, each controlling oscillators, recorded direct to 4 track.

GT022
Concessionaires
Skyline, GT022, c40, edition of 150
Synth/guitar duo project consisting of Brad Rose (The North Sea) and Pete Fosco.  Their debut release unveils massive cathedrals of melodic sound that push/pull the listener through cavern-like underworlds into open, pale-blue, impressionistic skyscapes.  Two side-length meditative improvisations, perfect listening for shimmering summer afternoons.

GT023
Studio SS/2 Hands on Knobs
Home Office split, GT023, c60, edition of 150
The daily reality of machines in the home and the office as interpreted by 2 synth artists.  Studio SS merges home appliances with analog and digital synthesis.  A mixture of both quiet noise and on-edge insomnia that hint at the claustrophobic terror state of a forgotten inmate.  2 Hands on Knobs engages office machinery with synths, sampling keyboards, and drum machines, creating industrial spirituals for a drone army or narrating  the awkward birth of an android.

GT024
Zaïmph
Coast to Coast, GT024, c40, edition of 200
In Marcia Bassett’s newest Zaimph recording, masked guitar roams from the East to the West, through rugged American landscapes.  Bassett’s guitar and effects are captured direct to cassette as a stereo room recording, summoning a gorgeous haze of tape noise and ambient sounds.

GT025
Merzbow
Untitled Nov 1989, GT025, c40, edition of 200
Electronics and field recordings collide in what many consider a peak moment of Merzbow’s extremely prolific career.  Recorded in 1989 and mixed this past February on a 4-track that Gift Tapes sent to Japan!  HEAVY factory sounds manipulated via amplification and signal processing to create a massive mechanized environment and an altered state.

GT026
Bee Mask
Canzoni dal Laboratorio del Silenzio Cosmico, GT026, c30, edition of 200
Bee Mask’s newest work gives a nod to experimental music of the 20th century; classic kosmiche zones are fused with musique concrete to form a surrealist sound collage of home studio and field recordings.  Synths, sampler, prepared piano, variable speed cassette players, voice and handmade instruments all come into play, explaining quantum mechanics via dream logic.

*All cassettes are pro-dubbed, imprinted, loaded with high bias tape, packaged in regular size Norelco cases, w/ 2-sided color cardstock j-card insert that includes artist name and album title.
